Jeanne  > Animals > Turtle Rescue of Long Island
These photos are of my journey to find a 5 year old Red Eared Slider Turtle a good home. She was brought into my workplace in a VERY small tank with no adequate food or shelter. I took her in and thought it would be easy to place her with someone. I was wrong!

After going online and educating myself about these turtles I found out that it is illegal to sell them in New Jersey. So I was unable to find anyone willing to take her. I called zoos, aquariums, pet supply stores, rescue groups, veterinarians you name it. I also learned that it is illegal and harmful to release it into the wild.

The only people that responded to help me was Turtle Rescue of Long Island.(http://www.turtlerescues.com)I spoke to 2 wonderful people, Steve and Julie. And made the trek to Long Island to bring the turtle, who I named Mrytle, to Julie's foster pond.

The following photos are mostly of the ponds and turtles on Julie's wonderful property.

PS...Mrytle was shipped to warm climate (Florida) to live happily ever after in a beautiful pond :-)

Jeanne > This is Mrytle. I ran out and got a large clear plastic tub for her. Food and aquatic plants. I place some large flat rocks for her to perch on and filled the tub with warm filtered water for her to swim in. Although inadequate for a Red Eared Slider, I took care of her the best I could until I placed her with Turtle Rescue of Long Island.
Jeanne > Here you can clearly see her red ears, green eyes and sharp nails!
Jeanne > Myrtle LOVED eating the aquatic plants that I bought for her! And the turtle pellets that she came with. That's about all I could get her to eat. She wouldn't even eat the mealie worms.
Jeanne > When I placed her tub in a safe place out in the sun she loved to perch up on the flat rocks that I had in there for her.
Jeanne > She was not a shy turtle and even kept her head out of her shell when some neighborhood kids came by to check her out.
Jeanne > I think she's kind of cute...for a turtle! :-)
Jeanne > Here we are at Julie's house. These turtles were taking a sunbath.
Jeanne > More turtles basking in the sun.
Jeanne > This guy was posing.
